Aug 10, 2008, How to Choose a Trim Color for your House

Why is choosing the right color trim so hard when it takes up such a small amount of the painted area of a house? Maybe because there are so many choices AND you don't have a road map. This web page dedicated to the perfect trim color will help de-mystify the process. There are also links to other helpful color pages such as understanding undertones in color.

Aug 10, 2008, Frame Siding House

Q.I have a little frame siding house that was painted brown and cream. Any ideas for new colors The house sets among quite a few trees, and a creek runs nearby. Not fancy at all, but cute

A.Generally homes that are in a wooded setting call for more muted colors and softer color schemes since nature itself is very subtle. Green is one of the most difficult colors to use well because there are so many variants. Also since there is so much greenery surrounding your house, if you don't quite get the undertone right, it screams mis-match.. I find that colors which mimic tree bark and stone look fabulous, also stay away from bright white trim unless you have vinyl or vinyl clad windows. Again, softer putty tones of trim look more like the types of whites found in nature. While you can't copy nature since nothing is better than nature itself, you can compliment it and live in harmony. Best, Rodd

Aug 10, 2008, Ranch Home with Shutters

Q. The best color to paint a small boring ranch home with shutters?

A. Some very important information which is missing from your question is your roof color, your location in the country and what your community standards are. If there is any stone or brick work on or about your house, or any unusual foundation plantings.

Generally, creating contrast on a house is one way to guarantee that it will look smaller so if your goal is to make the house look bigger, then reduce contrast between body, shutters, and trim.

I took a small 42 foot ranch home that had been painted a redwood color with white shutters and trim. The goal was to update the home which had been the same color since the 70's and to make it look larger. My color choices were a much lighter and muted seafoam green with a putty color trim and shutters. I developed a darker accent for the door so I could create a focal point of interest where there was not previously. Yes, the shutters and trim (gutters, facia, foundation and downspouts included) are the same color. Here's the palette; all Benjamin Moore paints: body-Misted Green, 2138-50, trim-Senora Gray, 1530, door-Hemlock, 719. Good Luck! Rodd
